Team TrickyScribe: The Indo-Nepal border at Raxaul—already buzzing with activity post-Operation Sindoor—added another page to its growing logbook of international drama. This time, the spotlight fell on a Canadian national of Indian origin who was intercepted by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during daily checks at the Maitri Bridge.
This isn’t the first time Raxaul has turned into a stage for foreign escapades. In recent months, the border outpost has seen the arrests of Chinese, French, and other nationals attempting to cross into Indian territory under questionable circumstances. As security gets tighter under the watchful eyes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna and Purnia, attempts to breach the border are being met with swift action and sharper scrutiny.
From Kapurthala to Canada & Back Again
The man in question, Harpreet Singh, originally hails from Kapurthala, Punjab. He had migrated to Canada nearly 12 years ago in search of labour work. In February 2023, he returned to India via Mumbai and made his way back to his village.
According to security sources, Harpreet was now trying to take a detour back to Canada—using Nepal as a launchpad. Unfortunately for him, Nepalese immigration officials didn’t roll out the red carpet. Lacking a valid visa, Singh was denied entry and promptly packed off to Raxaul, triggering alerts on the Indian side.
The Cab, The Confession & the Comeback
Harpreet’s journey to the border was reportedly facilitated by a cab driver identified as Kulvinder Singh alias Vicky, in a vehicle bearing the registration number PB10-125HR-8346A. The two drove straight from Punjab to Kathmandu without any legal paperwork that could support cross-border travel.
During interrogation, Harpreet admitted that he had indeed returned from Canada two years ago and was now trying to sneak back via Nepal. While he may have dreamt of maple leaves, his lack of valid documents meant he barely made it past the border shrubs.
Agencies on Toes
The vigilant SSB, which has significantly stepped up its game since Operation Sindoor, took swift action. Harpreet Singh was taken into custody and handed over to intelligence agencies for further questioning. With no valid visa in his possession, suspicionsi around his intent have only intensified.
Local authorities are preparing to transfer him to Hariaiya police station for further legal proceedings. Given the recent spate of foreign nationals caught at this border—some under more dubious pretexts—the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Raxaul as India tightens the screws on unauthorised entry.
Border Tales in the Age of Surveillance
With high-level security reviews taking place in Delhi and Bihar, the heat is on at India’s sensitive borders. Raxaul, a seemingly sleepy checkpoint, has now turned into a high-stakes chessboard. Whether you’re a Canadian returnee with expired plans or a foreign national with mischief in mind—this border doesn’t blink.
