Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Kicks Off ‘Pragati Yatra’ from Tharuhat Amid Criticism from Opposition

by Editor's Desk

Law Kumar Mishra | The TrickyScribe: Ignoring criticism from opposition leaders, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar embarked on his 15th annual tour, christened as Pragati Yatra, this year on Monday from Tharuhat in the Champaran district. Accompanied by BJP ministers Renu Devi and Janak Ram, Kumar began the tour at Bettiah, signaling the start of a series of engagements aimed at development and outreach.

New Name, Same Commitment
Originally scheduled as the Mahila Sambad Yatra beginning December 15, the tour was renamed Pragati Yatra. Opposition figures, including RJD President Lalu Prasad and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, criticized the initiative, terming it an “eyes-baking” or nayannsukh yatra and alleging a wasteful expenditure of ₹450 crores. However, Kumar remained undeterred, focusing on his governance agenda.

Focus on Development in Champaran
On the first day of the winter tour, Kumar visited Ghotwa village, a Tharu-dominated region, where he inaugurated a power station and laid the foundation for projects worth ₹171 crores. His visit extended to Chanpatiya, where he also held a review meeting with district officials in Bettiah, emphasizing infrastructure and development.

Legacy of Annual Tours
Since taking office, Kumar has undertaken annual yatras under various themes like Nyay Yatra, Vikas Yatra, Adhikar Yatra, and Jal Jeevan Hariyali Yatra. These tours have focused on issues ranging from women’s rights to environmental sustainability.

Last Yatra Before 2025 Assembly Elections
The Pragati Yatra, Kumar’s final tour in his current tenure, will continue with a second phase covering North Bihar districts starting January 4. With assembly elections looming next year, the tour holds critical importance in reinforcing his developmental vision and grassroots connection.
