Law Kumar Mishra | Team TrickyScribe: Patna district administration and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) initiated separate investigations into a tragic accident at a Patna Metro tunnel construction site on Ashok Rajpath, where two workers lost their lives, and six others were injured. The incident occurred last night in a 60-foot-deep tunnel near Patna University.
Two workers, tunnel helper Manoj Behra (27) and Vijay Kumar Behra (36), were killed on site, while a third worker remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh has appointed the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Law and Order to lead the investigation into the mishap. Simultaneously, Patna DM undertook meeting of Patna Metro’s Project Monitoring Group thereby giving articulate instructions.
DMRC, acting as a consultant on the Patna Metro project, announced in a press release, “DMRC is conducting an independent investigation into the incident to determine the cause and identify necessary safety measures.” DMRC confirmed that a mechanical failure in the locomotive caused the accident.
Patna Metro project spans 39 km across two phases and is being constructed by Larsen & Toubro. The construction company has assured compensation for the victims’ families in addition to the statutory ex gratia sanctioned by the labor department.
This incident marks the second accident within the metro project in a week. Recently, a crane accident at RPS More on Bailey Road resulted in the death of another worker. Last year, a separate tragedy occurred at the Mithapur site when four auto passengers were killed after heavy equipment from the metro project fell onto their vehicle.
